Sony goes all in on cloud with game TV streaming
The new streaming game service will provide instant access to games from previous versions of products including those for the PlayStation 3 and PS2. Even non-console owners will be able to access it on TVs, phones, tablets, promised Andrew House, group CEO for Sony Computer Entertainment.
A closed beta will begin in the US at the end of January, with a full rollout this summer.
Also at CES on Tuesday, Sony said that by the end of December it had sold more than 4.2 million units of its new PlayStation 4 game console, which went on sale in mid-November.
House also unveiled the companys new cloud-based video service, which will offer easier access to TV content for customers via its PlayStation consoles. The service will enable people to watch TV and movies whenever they want and on whatever device they want, including devices such as the iPad and smartphones. The service will also provide the ability to search across video-on-demand content, as well as live TV programming.
Sony will be testing the new service this year in the US.

Samsung Posts Profit Decline Amid Battle With Apple
Operating profit was 8.3 trillion won ($7.8 billion) in the three months ended December, the Suwon, South Korea-based company said in a statement today. That compares with profit of 9 trillion won a year earlier, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.
Sales of Samsung’s Galaxy S4 have slowed amid competition from the iPhone 5s and 5c, and Chinese makers selling handsets for as low as $100. The world’s biggest maker of smartphones and televisions is introducing new designs, including curved screens and bendable displays, to spark sales after ramping up spending on employee bonuses and Christmas shopping promotions.
VIDEO: `Lot of Upside Ahead for Samsung Stock: Newman
“There isn’t a real driver in the first quarter, with not many new products lined up to show solid profit,” said Jae H. Lee, a Seoul-based analyst at Daiwa Securities Group Inc. “The one-time costs, such as bonus payouts, were bigger than what had been estimated.”
Samsung paid a special bonus of 700 billion won to workers in the quarter, Shawn Kim, a Seoul-based analyst at Morgan Stanley, said in a report yesterday.
Bendable Screen
Samsung was expected to post operating profit of 10 trillion won, according to the average of 32 analyst estimates compiled by Bloomberg, with expectations falling about 5 percent in the past month as analysts scaled back high-end smartphone projections.
VIDEO: Samsung Introduces TV With Bendable Screen at CES
The profit decline was Samsung’s first since the third quarter of 2011.
Shares of Samsung fell 0.2 percent to 1,304,000 won at the close of trade in Seoul. Between Dec. 24 and Jan. 3, the stock dropped 9.6 percent, a slump that erased about $19 billion of market value, or more than the capitalization of smartphone competitors HTC Corp. (2498), LG Electronics Inc. (066570) and BlackBerry Ltd. combined.
Samsung, which is facing stalling demand for TVs, said today it will release its first set with a bendable screen later this year. Viewers can change the display from flat to curved by touching a button, it said in a statement.
The company is focusing on ultra high definition screens, which offer four times the resolution of conventional displays, and signing content partnerships with pay-TV operators, Hollywood studios and streaming services to spark demand.
Lowered Estimates
Fourth-quarter sales were about 59 trillion won, the company said today. That increase of 5.3 percent was the slowest since the third quarter of 2011 and compares with the 61.5 trillion-won average of 36 estimates.
Samsung didn’t provide net income or details of divisional earnings, with audited results due to be reported later this month.
Apple, which released new iPhones on Sept. 20, sold 9 million handsets in the first weekend. It shipped 33.8 million smartphones in the quarter ended Sept. 30, the Cupertino, California-based company said.
Samsung shipped 13 million units of its S4 in the fourth quarter, down from 17 million in the previous three months, Daewoo Securities Co. (006800) said in a Dec. 23 report.
Fourth-quarter operating profit at the mobile unit, the company’s biggest contributor to earnings, was 6.4 trillion won, according to the median estimate of six analysts surveyed by Bloomberg News. Sales rose 19 percent, according to the analyst survey.
China Mobile
Samsung shipped 91 million smartphones in the fourth quarter, up 4 percent from the previous quarter, according to an estimate by KB Investment & Securities Co. In the third quarter, it was estimated to have shipped 87.3 million devices.
“There’s still a lot of upside ahead,” Mark C. Newman, a Hong Kong-based analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein, told Bloomberg Television. “Samsung’s actually the only company in the world that is actually making money on low-end smartphones right now.”
The company faces new competition in China, the world’s largest handset market, after Apple last month struck a distribution deal with China Mobile Ltd. (941), the biggest carrier by users. Samsung is the top seller in China.
“The latest China Mobile-Apple deal, as well as upcoming bigger-sized iPhones, will start to intrude on Samsung’s product portfolio and could steal some of its share away,” Hong Sung Ho, a Seoul-based analyst at LIG Investment & Securities Co., said. “The smartphone market will get more heat this year, and that raises a concern.”

Nokia Lumia 530 iamge leaks confirms 4 3 screen
The worlds most popular Windows Phone smartphone is about to get a successor. Meet the Lumia 530 and its first public appearance in a photo. The phone was spotted in a Windows Phone buying guide showing the available devices running Windows Phone 8.1.
No confirmed Lumia 530 specifications are available at this time, but we can make some educated guesses based on the image above. Judging by the size difference to the Lumia 635, the Lumia 530 will sport a 4.3" display. Thats a slight bump from the 4.0" (800 x 480 pixels) display of the Lumia 520.
There are also no front-facing camera nor physical navigation buttons, as Windows Phone 8.1 allows the use of virtual on-screen keys.
Finally, its interesting to note that the Nokia logo is present on the phone. Microsoft bought Nokia Devices & Services for 5.44 billion but it wasnt clear if the company is going to keep using the Nokia brand in its upcoming products. We guess for the Lumia 530 at least, things are going to remain the same.

(Consumer Electronics Show) Las Vegas, Nevada, January 6, 2014 – ALCATEL ONETOUCH today unveiled the IDOL X+ that delivers life-like content and perfectly matches design with performance.
Building on the global success of the IDOL series of smartphones, the IDOL X+ combines the octa-core processor with a 5” full HD 441ppi display and 13.1 megapixel 1080p camera all in an ultra-trim handset that is just 7.9 millimeters thin. SAMSUNG Releases a Line of HDBaseT enabled Commercial HD Displays
Samsung Electronics America, Inc., a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., together with the HDBaseT Alliance announced the addition of HDBaseT to select models of Samsung’s large format display product (LFD) line. With the introduction of the new HDBaseT plug-in module, LFD installations become significantly simpler and less costly.
HDBaseT technology, powered by the Valens chipset, enables all-in-one connectivity between HD video sources and remote displays through a single 100m/328ft CAT5e/6 cable, delivering uncompressed high definition video, audio, Ethernet, control signals and up to 100 watts of power. The HDBaseT Alliance will showcase the HDBaseT Receiver on Samsung’s new ME75C full HD display at its booth, LVCC South Hall 1 #20215.
“HDBaseT provides our customers with a connectivity solution that significantly reduces the time and money required to complete the job when compared to other typical cabling options,” said Thomas Evans, Director of Marketing – Professional Display at Samsung’s Enterprise Business Division. “Using HDBaseT for digital signage is an industry game changer that enables professional installers to complete their projects on-time and on-budget.”
HDBaseT has become a global standard for installing digital displays in conference rooms and board rooms. HDBaseT eliminates cabling distance limitations by delivering uncompressed video, audio, control and Ethernet up to 100 meters. Avoiding video compression ensures installers do not have to sacrifice high image quality and delivery speed, and using a standard CAT5e/6 twisted-pair LAN cable with regular RJ-45 connectors makes in-field termination simple and fast.
“The commitment Samsung has shown to advancing the development and deployment of HDBaseT has been strong since Day 1, and today that commitment is stronger than ever,” said Micha Risling, marketing chair of the HDBaseT Alliance. “Since co-founding the HDBaseT Alliance in 2007, Samsung has both helped grow the Alliance to nearly 80 members made up of the world’s leading A/V manufacturers and led the development of HDBaseT-enabled components for professionals and consumers.”
The ME75C is part of the ME – C Series and is a slim, lightweight 75 inch display that supports the new HDBaseT plug-in module. It is also a reliable and cost-effective way to convey a more impactful message in retail environments, conference rooms, public spaces and educational venues. The ME75C provides increased energy savings over CCFL backlit displays with a thin chassis and narrow bezel to help simplify installation and provide an impactful message.
The new HDBaseT plug-in module, PIM-HDBT, will be available with compatible Samsung LFDs at the end of February 2014. For more information, please visit the product page Samsung PIM-HDBT.

Samsung Dont hold your breath for a Tizen phone in the U S
Ryan Bidan, Samsungs director of product marketing for its U.S. mobile operations, said that Samsung has not announced anything specific related to Tizen for the U.S. market, but is continuing to work on devices. However, an in interview with FierceWireless here at the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show, he indicated that U.S. consumers shouldnt hold their breath for a Samsung Tizen phone.
"We dont feel the U.S. is a great test market for those kinds of products," he said, noting that Samsung will likely roll out Linux-based Tizen phones in other regions of the world. "The U.S. market is pretty mature. Bringing a new entrant here that doesnt meet a certain performance bar would be a challenge. Recognizing that, we dont want to set ourselves up for failure."
Tizen phones will likely start to be sold by the end of March, NTT DoCoMo spokesman Jun Otori told AFP on Wednesday. Samsungs first Tizen smartphone will likely be unveiled next month around the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona, Spain, Japans Mainichi Shimbun reported Wednesday.
Samsung is the largest backer of the Tizen Association, an open-source group that was created through the merger of the former MeeGo and LiMo platforms. Other Tizen supporters include Sprint (NYSE:S), Intel, Huawei, Orange and Vodafone. Samsung has positioned Tizen as one of its many platform options, but analysts have consistently said Samsung could be using Tizen as a hedge against Googles (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android, which is Samsungs bread and butter for smartphones and tablets. (Samsung also supports Microsofts (NASDAQ:MSFT) Windows Phone 8 platform.)
In the wide-ranging interview, Bidan touted the company line that it must innovate on software as well as hardware to set itself apart. "Its absolutely the right direction for us. Our opportunity to differentiate and create really neat products for consumers lies in a holistic product solution--hardware and software," he said.
At the same time, Bidan acknowledged that Samsung has invested heavily in a multitude of software features for devices like its Galaxy S4 smartphone, but that with so many of them, consumers could easily lose track and not use them. Bidan estimated that when Samsung unveiled the S4 in March the company went through well over 80 different software features, ranging from "Air View," which allows a user to hover with their fingers over the screen to preview the content of an email, image gallery or video without having to open it, to an "S Translate" translating service that supports English, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese and Latin American Spanish, and supports speech to text and text to speech.
"Its something we struggle with all the time," he said, referring to how Samsung can continue to push software innovations without creating so much clutter that consumers lose interest. "It takes a certain amount of discipline to bring focus into that." This year, Bidan said, Samsung will focus more on "refining the things we are talking about and being more focused in the messages we are bringing to consumers" since there are likely only a handful of features consumers will find meaningful.
Samsung, the worlds largest maker of smartphones and handsets by volume, made a splash last fall with the introduction of its Galaxy Gear smart watch. Smart watches, and wearables in general, have been a major theme of CES this year, and Samsung executives have said the Gear was just Samsungs first stab at wearables. Some consumers blanched at the $399 price tag for the device, which is essentially tethered to a Samsung smartphone. Samsung said in November it had shipped 800,000 Gear smart watches in two months since its debut despite middling reviews of the gadget.
Bidan said Samsung went with the watch form factor and the idea of getting notifications on the wrist because they were familiar and easy to understand concepts. However, he said that "for wearables to take off, we need to find those consumer use cases, we need to make them relevant, we need to make them interesting." Until Samsung and other companies get wearables into the mass market, they are not going to know what those experiences are, he said. Without giving anything away, Bidan said that Gear is "a platform that can be extended."
